get it while it’s cheap

5 August – 27 August

Opening reception: Friday, 5 August, from 6:00pm – 11:00pm

Marginal Utility is pleased to present “get it while it's cheap”, a summer group show that features new projects by Jim Grilli, Brittany Papale, Matt Ortega and Gahee Park.

Staggering along the path that traverses the concrete and the symbolic -and back again-, each of the projects in this exhibition give form to various stages and degrees of metamorphosis, displacement and reification.

-In an effort to regain a sense of authorship within the stagnant sea of texts, Matt Ortega presents a video consisting of clips that are poached from the internet and stitched together into new recombinant narratives.

-Through the use of many video cameras Brittany Papale presents a closed circuit video that makes the viewer aware of the potentially embarrassing split between their own physical body and a highly mediated televisual representation of themselves.

-Employing a process that involves found pigment and oxidization, Jim Grilli’s large two-dimensional sculptures made from dust and detritus swept up at the artist’s day job offer a layered visual experience born of the grime of the daily grind.

-Humorous and intentionally revolting, Gahee Park's paintings present scenarios of consumption and excretion that function like a stomachache that disrupts the smooth digestion of easel paintings in the commercial art world and the ethos of overproduction that nourishes our present moment.
