Opening reception Friday, 7 April from 6-10pm

Marginal Utility is proud to present Author of the Quixote, a solo exhibition by the New York based artist Zorawar Sidhu.

Reproductions of artworks, as stand-ins for the objects they depict, provide personal access to an artwork that is otherwise unavailable. They do so, however, at the expense of the material presence of the object.

Sidhu begins with these reproductions and attempts to reverse this loss by remaking artworks in their original materials:

1: Documentation photographs of ancient sculptures were transferred to blocks of Carrara marble, which were then carved traditionally with a hammer and chisel according to the information provided by the photograph.

2: Reproductions of Renaissance chalk drawings were converted into lithographic plates, with which hand-ground natural minerals such as sanguine, hematite, and black chalk were arranged upon a linen rag paper.

Zorawar Sidhu was born in Punjab, India in 1985. He received a B.A. in the History of Art from Johns Hopkins University in 2007, a BFA in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2012, and an MFA from Hunter College in 2016. He currently works across a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and installation.
