Marginal Utility / 2C Books is proud to present ‘Pick a Path with Heart,’ an exhibition of woodcut prints by Philadelphia-based artist Henry Murphy.

Drawing on the visual language of woodcut artists such as Shiko Munakata, Antonio Frasconi, and Dan Miller, Murphy produces graphic translations of lived experience, rendering spaces encountered across the Philadelphia region and beyond. The prints move between the density of deep woods, the openness of the sea, and the texture of the city street, finding in each a shared commitment to close, engaged looking.

The work turns on a sophisticated interplay between line and shape, holding the threshold between mark and recognizable object. What emerges is neither straightforward documentation nor pure abstraction, but a third layer, one inflected by mental imagery, where the world presenting itself and the world held in the mind press against one another.
